Hello again blog readers in my last post you learned about Greek athletes and their lives. In this post you the reader will learn about Olympic events. First off the Olympic events continually changed over time. Some Olympic games were even banned over time. Can you believe that. No one even knows how the Olympics started not even me. A lot of people thought it was to keep men fit and also for military skills. Here is another awesome fact athletes first wore shorts but after a while they started to compete naked. There are three stories behind this. The first story is a runner from Athens was about to win a but then his shorts fell off and he tripped on his shorts. The ref made a new rule that no one can wear clothes. The second story is a runner from Megara lost his shorts half way through the race and still went on to win. Pretty funny stories right. The third one is not really a story it is more of an alternative which is people just thought Greeks like to show off their body. So more on the events, one event out of six events is running. There are 4 more events but I am sharing my top six. There were three running races one was called a Stade which was a sprint of one length of the stadium. The second race called the Diaulos was also a sprint race but it was two lengths of the stadium. The third running race was called the Dolichos were runners ran twenty or twenty four lengths of the stadium. A fun fact is if you one all three races you were known as triastes. The second sport was long jump this is an event where athletes have weights in there hand and jump as far as they can. The third event is discus this is an event where athletes throw a disc made of either bronze lead or marble so they were hard to through. The forth event is javelin like discus the javelins were different from ones today and in this event athletes throw a javelin. The fifth event is boxing. In boxing athletes try to either surrender, knock out, or kill the opponent. Different from modern day boxing any blow was allowed. In the sixth sport wrestling Greek wrestlers could do anything but bite or put their fingers into soft parts of the body. That is it for the events and my final blog post hope you liked it. This is final post part one out of two parts. So in this post I will be telling you the reader about greek athletes and their lives. First of all you may be thinking their athletes there so cool but not everyone in Greece loved athletes. A lot of people said that you should not judge someone by their strength you should judge them by their wisdom. People also said that athletes sleep, eat, and put their bodies through to much. As crazy as this sounds there were "haters" in ancient Greece. Moving forward athletes had special trainers in ancient Greece to help them. This training was led by a man named Hellanodikai. Greek athlete training was not like oh whatever i'll win for sure, the athletes trained super seriously. The athletes had to swear on oath that they trained for ten months and the athletes had to be there a month before the games began. If you were an athlete who did not come a month before, you were disqualified and could not participate in the games. The athletes also had many facilities. As well as having a stadium and hippodrome which is a horse track used for some events. The most important facilities were the swimming pool and bath. The athletes also had a palaistra which is a large square building for training in jumping and fighting events and of course a gym. There were no swimming races in the events so the swimming pool was for recreation. The athletes also had what is a modern day sauna and of course a bath to bath after exercise. The athletes most importantly participated in the events. I will tell you more about those events in my final post part two. In my final posts I will like to answer the questions I first posted to you the reader. 1. What was it like being a greek athlete in the olympics 2. What were the events and what were they like. Hello blog friends as you know I am talking about the greek olympics. This just an introduction to my next couple of post. This is still one of my final post. So let me start by saying that the olympics honors Zeus. Only greek nationals could participate but woman can not. Also there was 100 that were sacrificed to honor the gods. In addition to that athletes made small sacrifices and prayed to the gods. In ancient Greece olympics there were five days of events. The events were never precisely in the same order. These are just a few facts but a lot more will be displayed in my next post. Preview Post05/02/2014 Hello again this is your author telling you what is to come in my final post. I am focusing a lot on ancient Greece olympics versus modern day olympics. I am also focusing on the the events and what athletes did in each event. I have already learned a lot about the olympics and it interest me a lot. Like how in ancient greece they had a closing and beginning ceremony. I also learned that the olympics are honoring Zeus in many ways. The olympic sports in ancient greece are similar and not similar in many ways. Here is some more information about this post. I will explain everything I learned throughout this experience. It will be very informative and I hope that you will like it. Also it will include a lot of facts and be in a post by post format. Meaning I will do a post on one thing and a different post on another thing. You will get to find out more in my final post. 1. "Olympics." Ancient Greece. University Press Inc. 2012. Web April 7 2014. <http://www.ancientgreece.com/s/Olympics/> I think this is trustworthy because it provides a lot of information. It is also trustworthy because it says University at the bottom next to the copyright. I am still not completely sure that it is trustworthy because it is a .com website and I don't know much about this so I can't compare it to anything. 2. "The Olympic Games." History.com. A&E Television Networks, n.d. Web. 06 May 2014. <http://www.history.com/topics/olympic-games> I think this website is trustworthy because it is history.com and it is world wide respected. It also provides a lot of information. This information is useful because it answer a lot of my questions. 3. Ross, Stewart. The Original Olympics. Lincolnwood, IL: P. Bedrick, 1999. Print. My third source is a book called The Original Olympics so it does not have a website. This book is by Stewart Ross and is copy righted in 1999. This source is very trustworthy because it is a book. It provides a lot of information to about the Olympics and how it started. 4. An extra source is http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/greeks/greek_olympics_01.shtml Hello again blog friends in this post I will be sharing my three research questions. My first question is what events were there and what did athletes do in the events? My next question is have any Greek sports evolved and played in the present day Olympics if not why didn't they evolve? My third and final question is was what is the life of an athlete? Hello blog friends this is Dalton talking to you about ancient Greece Olympics. I choose Olympics because I really like sports and like to play sports and that is basically the Olympics so it interested me. It grabbed my attention because of how interesting it was. I specifically want to know what the games were like. For example were they very extreme or more mild sports? Also were there certain sports that ranked higher than the other? In addition to that did any sports played in the Olympics today start in ancient Greece and if so what are they and how did they evolve to be played today ? I have many other questions but those are the main ones. I expect to discover the answers to all my questions and more about the Greek Olympics. I also expect to discover more about the rules of the sports. |
